Alkalinity buffers

Alkalinity buffers in powder or concentrated liquid.

Powdered additives

Mixing, storage and dosing instructions

Mix 5g with 100ml of RO water to produce a liquid buffer solution that can be added to a reef aquarium to raise or maintain the alkalinity level. Add powder to water slowly and mix or shake to dissolve. DO NOT add powder directly to the aquarium. The dissolved liquid solution is easy to dose by hand or with automatic pumps and can be stored indefinitely between 10 and 30C in a closed container. If the liquid is stored open to the air evaporation will occur, increasing the concentration and can allow powder to settle out of solution. If this occurs replace the evaporate losses with RO and remix. To avoid this happening, it is recommended to only produce enough solution for 4 weeks of use at a time.

100ml solution/100 litres raises alkalinity by 3.4dKH (1.2 meq/L) (60.7ppm CaCO3)
30ml solution/100 litres raises alkalinity by 1dKH (0.4 meq/L) (17.9ppm CaCO3)
Do not raise alkalinity by more than 1dKH per day in an established reef aquarium. Excessive dosing raises pH temporarily, which can be reduced by adding in a high flow area prior to a skimmer.
